Nurtured by Knowledge examines the frustrations and limitations of conventional Western academic research on social change and describes the struggle to fashion a new approach based on the principle that people have a universal right to participate in the production of knowledge that directly affects their lives. The heart of the book is a series of case studies from Canada, India, Africa, and Latin America on participatory action research (PAR). The book concludes with an analysis of the lessons that can be taken from these case studies and gives a comprehensive picture of the history and current status of PAR in striving to satisfy the need for the liberation and recovery of "community."
