The National Farm Products Council supervises the operations of the Canadian Beef Cattle Research Market Development and Promotion Agency. This agency was created in 2002 to coordinate the research and market development activities of the Canadian beef industry.
The agency's ability to assess mandatory levies on domestic and imported beef provides it with a stable and predictable source of funds.
So far, the beef cattle agency is unique. However, the Council has a mandate to hold public hearings and advise the government if other farm-product groups propose to set up their own national promotion and research agencies with similar powers.
