Big things can happen at a local level. In Canada, sustainable community development is catching on, with some great results. Communities are working to become more livable by acting on urban transportation issues, energy use reduction, alternative energy, and sustainable planning. Decision makers, business people, community organizations, citizens and youth are working together to improve the quality of life in their communities. Car Pooling

The result? Improved local air quality and community health, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, a more vibrant local economy and community pride. It's a winning combination. Read on to see how communities are focusing on climate change.

Communities Take the One-Tonne Challenge!

Forty communities selected from across Canada are creating One-Tonne Community Challenges. They will adopt a rich variety of approaches as they build Challenges to engage their citizens in greenhouse gas reduction activities in their daily lives, while addressing their local needs and priorities.

If your community would like to create a One-Tonne Challenge we can help by providing tools and information to get started. They will be posted in the near future on this website. If you have any questions, contact us.

Check this page frequently for community updates. You'll be able to follow the communities as their Challenges develop and find resources that will help interested communities take the Challenge.

EcoAction Community Funding Program

In addition, the EcoAction Community Funding Program continues to fund environmental projects by non-profit, non-government organizations. EcoAction will reserve 50 percent of its funds for community climate change projects that assist Canadians in reducing their personal greenhouse gas emissions.
