International Policy and Related Activities

The International component objectives are to enable Canada to enhance its international analysis and negotiating capacity in several key policy areas, including the Kyoto Mechanisms, Compliance, sinks and developing country related issues such as long term emissions reduction engagement. It also promotes Canada's position and interests in the international climate change negotiation process in support of Canada's international climate change objectives in order to:

1. maximize Canada's ability to meet its Kyoto commitments at the lowest cost through aggressive pursuit of Kyoto mechanisms, securing of favorable terms for sinks, and other measures;
2. contribute to the achievement of global climate change objectives, and ensure a level playing field with Canada's competitors, by maximizing participation of key developed and developing economies in the Kyoto Protocol; and,
3. maximize opportunities for Canadian business in international projects and initiatives on climate change.
