Project Green - Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan for Honouring our Kyoto Commitment

How to Apply – Eligibility Criteria

Each TEAM project must result in, or lead directly to, GHG reductions, removals, or both. The merits of each project are examined in relation to the overall picture of GHG mitigation. For example, a project by itself may only result in a very low level of GHG mitigation. However, the same project, implemented many times in different locations, would add up to significant GHG mitigation. In addition, a project that results in a very low level of GHG mitigation may also be a key enabling technology – without its success, other technologies that would lead to significant levels of GHG mitigation would not be possible. For example, without hydrogen storage tanks for vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars would not be possible.

How TEAM Determines Eligibility

TEAM measures a project's eligibility for funding against the following criteria:

  • The company's commitment to validating its technology performance and GHG benefits
  • The risks to success
  • The probability that the technology can be replicated in Canada or internationally
  • Opportunity to leverage partnerships with other federal or arm's length funding agencies or other levels of government
  • Potential environmental and health benefits to implementing the technology
  • Potential economic and social benefits to implementing the technology
  • The project's need for incremental government investment to succeed
  • Repayment options for profitable projects
  • Accessibility of the technology to small- and medium-sized enterprises

Lower Priority Projects

Project proposals that focus only on GHG sinks or reservoirs and that meet TEAM criteria are eligible for TEAM consideration. However, GHG sinks include such things as carbon sequestration in forests and agricultural soils; GHG reservoirs include such things as coal bed methane displacement, enhanced oil recovery/reservoir storage, and enhanced carbon dioxide recycling. Because such initiatives generally take place over the long-term and are usually very expensive, TEAM assigns them a lower priority for funding.

Projects That Are Not Eligible

Projects that are related to climate change adaptation, the measurement of ambient GHG concentrations in the atmosphere, potential climate change impacts, and computer software packages or products are ineligible for TEAM funding.
