Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works

FUNDING TO THE MUNICIPALITY OF LAC-DROLET RAISED TO $386,500 FOR WATER SUPPLY INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS

Québec, November 24, 2005 Nathalie Normandeau, Quebec's Ministre des Affaires municipales et des Régions, and the Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of Canada Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, are pleased to announce that the Municipality of Lac-Drolet will receive an additional $180,250 in government funding, up from $206,250 to $386,500, under the Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works Program to upgrade its water supply infrastructure.

The work, partially carried out and slated for completion in 2006, primarily involves a search for underground water, the installation and connection of two new drinking water supply wells, the redevelopment of existing wells and the upgrading of the well disinfection, pumping and control systems at the main pumping station. This work will help ensure that some 800 residents enjoy a better quality water supply and that the municipality's water supply facilities are brought up to standard.

The work will require an eligible investment of $773,000, of which, under the terms of the agreement, $386,500 will be assumed by the Municipality of Lac-Drolet and $193,250 by each the Government of Canada and Government of Quebec, for a total of $386,500 in combined government funding. The additional funding is made necessary by the need to develop two new water sources after the two initially identified and projected sources yielded disappointing results.

Lac-Drolet Mayor Jean-Guy Gagnon expressed his delight at the positive impact this work will have on improving community infrastructure and drinking water quality, thereby enhancing the quality of life of Lac-Drolet residents.

The Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works program is aimed at helping communities repair, replace and build water supply, sewer and sewage treatment systems, develop projects involving experiments with new technologies and create projects that enhance, restore or construct facilities with economic, urban or regional side benefits. This aspect of the program is overseen by the Ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions. The program also supports highway systems and public transportation, under the responsibility of the Ministère des Transports du Québec and Infrastructures-Transport. Canada Economic Development administers the program on behalf of the Government of Canada. The program will generate work worth a total of $1.686 billion.
