Partnerships Programs Overview

Research Partnerships Programs (RPP) foster collaborations between university researchers and other sectors, including government and industry, in order to develop new knowledge and expertise, and to transfer this knowledge and expertise to Canadian-based organizations.

Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) Grants
CRD grants support well-defined projects undertaken by university researchers and their private-sector partners. CRD awards cover up to half of the total eligible direct project costs, with the industrial partner(s) providing the balance in cash and in kind.
Idea to Innovation (I2I) Program

The Idea to Innovation program provides funding to university researchers for research and development activities leading to technology transfer to a new or established Canadian company. Two distinct funding phases are proposed; these phases are limited in time and the direct costs of research in the first phase will be entirely supported by NSERC while those of the second phase will be shared with a private partner.

Intellectual Property Mobilization (IPM) Program
(formerly called the Intellectual Property Management Program)
The IPM program provides funding in partnership with universities, hospitals and colleges to support activities related to managing intellectual property and interacting with industry. Institutions apply in groups for support of initiatives to improve the effectiveness of technology transfer to Canadian industry.

NSERC/The Canada Council for the Arts New Media Initiative

This joint initiative supports scientists and engineers collaborating with artists to create novel and synergistic ways of thinking and working across disciplines, thereby making contributions to both the arts and industry.

Research Network Grants (RNG)
The Research Network Grants program funds large-scale, complex research proposals that involve multi-sectorial collaborations on a common research theme and that demonstrate the added advantages of a networking approach.
Research Partnership Agreements (RPA)
The RPA program aims to build strong linkages between the private sector and researchers in universities and federal institutes and to create synergy among the partners.
Strategic Project Grants (SPG)

The Strategic Project Grants program funds project research in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next ten years.

Novel Next Generation Technology Initiative in Energy Research and Technology Related to Greenhouse Gas Mitigation (GHGM)

This initiative, established with Natural Resources Canada, has concluded. The last competition was held in 2005.

Technology Partnerships Program
This program no longer exists. It has been replaced by the Idea to Innovation (I2I) Program.
