Building Research Capacity in Small UniversitiesProfessors in small universities may be just as qualified to do research as those in the bigger ones, but they face special challenges. If their university specializes in undergraduate education, they can't call on graduate students to join their research teams. If their university is far from Canada's major urban centres, there may be few businesses with whom to forge partnerships. And small universities, no matter how excellent, simply can't provide the full range of research infrastructure the big universities do. Because it's important to make the most of Canada's research talent – wherever it's located – we've launched the Research Capacity Development in Small Universities Pilot Program to help small universities develop their research capabilities. Of the 34 institutions that applied for this new award in 2004, seven were successful. Brock University, Saint Mary's University, the University of Lethbridge, Saint Francis Xavier University, Lakehead University, Laurentian University and the Université du Québec à Rimouski will each receive up to $1.5 million through this initiative.
