Low Birthweight – Mothers Aged 20 to 39 Years

View this map

Abstract

There are low numbers of low birthweight babies in this age category, but this is not unexpected since the younger and older mothers, who have higher rates of low birthweight births, have been excluded.

Low birthweight (LBW) is a health status indicator, and is defined as babies born with weight under 2500 grams. The proportion of low birthweight babies born to mothers 15 years of age and older indicates the health and well-being of a population. Health status refers to the state of health of a person or group, and measures causes of sickness and death. It can also include people’s assessment of their own health.

This map is very similar to that of the first map for mothers of all ages because they represent a large proportion of the all ages group. As one would expect, the same census divisions (CDs) are identified as having the highest LBW rates (with the addition of Mkinac and Pabok in Quebec; Queens County in Prince Edward Island; and Yarmouth County in Nova Scotia) and the lowest LBW rates (L'Île d'Orléans). The greatest difference overall is that, for the 20 to 39 age group, a far higher proportion of the CDs are found in the categories of lower LBW (that is, LBW rates of 5.99% and less). This is not unexpected since the younger and older mothers, who have higher rates of LBW, have been excluded.
