Archive Mapping Tool Help Page

The Atlas of Canada's Archive Maps are easy to use, but you may not be familiar with all the features. This Help document describes the features and tells you how to use them.

Archive Mapping Tool

1. Top Navigation Bars

The navigation bars at the top of the window provide links to other pages, as described by their titles. These bars appear at the top of every page of the Web site.

2. Map Archives Menu

Map Archives from the left hand menu contains older Atlas of Canada maps from previous publications made available online, including the first 5 editions of the Atlas.

Instructions:

  1. Position the cursor over the Map Archives title.
  2. A pop-up menu will appear to the right showing the collections that are available.
  3. Position the cursor over the collection you are interested in and click.
  4. The window will refresh showing the maps that are available. All the maps from past Atlas editions are organized into geographical themes. Select the map of choice.

3. Map Title

This is the title of the map selected and also indicates the collection to which it belongs.

4. Toolbar

The toolbar buttons give you access to more information about the map. The buttons enable you to navigate within the map, get help and print the map.

Zoom In

Zoom In

This tool lets you view part of the map in greater detail.

Instructions:

  1. Click the "Zoom In" button.
  2. Position the cursor over the part of the map you would like to see in greater detail.
  3. Click the mouse.
  4. The map will be redrawn to show more detail.

Zoom Out

Zoom Out

This tool lets you view a larger area with less detail.

Instructions:

  1. Click the "Zoom In" button.
  2. The map will be redrawn to show a larger area.

View Full Map

View Full Map

This tool lets you zoom out to view the entire map.

Instructions:

  1. Click the “View Full Map” button.
  2. The map will be redrawn to show all of it.

Map Size

Map Size

This tool lets you change the size of the map window.

Instructions:

  1. Click the one of the three buttons, “S” (small map) or “M” (medium map) or “L” (large map).
  2. The map will be redrawn in either a larger or small window size.

Note: This tool has been designed to work best after using the "Zoom In" tool at least once.

Browse Maps

Browse Maps

This tool lets you browse other archive maps. Just click one of the icons to browse. The order of maps is the same that appears in the pull-down selection menus.

Instructions:

  1. Click one of the "Browse Maps" symbols.
  2. The browser window will refresh with a new map.

Download Map

Download Map

This tool moves the current page to the bottom of the browser window, where download instructions are located. The download function allows users to save the full-sized map to their hard drive.

Instructions:

  1. Click the "Download Map" button.
  2. The browser window will move to the bottom of the page where download instructions appear.

Print Preview

Print Preview

This tool refreshes the browser window with a print preview page. It provides a printer-friendly, 8.5” x 11” letter-size, portrait-format page that includes the current view of the map and a brief text describing it.

Instructions:

  1. Click the "Print Preview" button.
  2. The browser window will refresh with a print preview page.
  3. Print the map with the “Print” tool on this page or by using the browser's print function.

Note: The maps print best using a colour printer.

Help

Help

This tool gives you access to these instructions for using the Archive Maps’ features.

Instructions:

  1. Click the "Help" button.
  2. The browser window will refresh showing the help instructions.

5. Map Window

The map window shows the currently selected map.

6. Pan Arrows

The pan arrows are four small triangles on the sides of the map frame. They let you move left, right, up and down to see parts of the map that are not currently visible.

Instructions:

  1. Click the arrow that points in the direction you would like to move.
  2. The map will be redrawn towards the direction selected.

7. Locator Map

The locator map shows the full map you have selected.
