These bar charts compares the percentage of persons 15 years and age or older who were married or living common-law compared to persons who were single. The data are from the 1981, 1991 and 1996 Censuses of Population. One chart provides the values for males, while the other chart shows values for females. The vertical axis gives the percentage values ranging from 0 to 80, and the horizontal axis lists marital status classes, either as married/common-law, or as single. Each status has three bars for different dates, 1981, 1991 and 1996. The approximate values for males are as follows: married/common-law: 1981 (68%), 1991 (64%), 1996 (61%); and single: 1981 (24%), 1991 (28%), 1996 (30%). For females, the values are: married/common-law: 1981 (62%), 1991 (59%), 1996 (57%); and single: 1981 (19%), 1991 (22%), 1996 (24%).
