The Surficial materials data comes from the map Surficial Materials of Canada, published at the scale of 1:5 000 000 by the Geological Survey of Canada. It portrays broad genetic categories of surface materials, such as alluvial, lacustrine, marine, and glacial, as well as bedrock. The categories are subdivided according to different characteristics: texture such as marine mud or marine sand; thickness such as till blanket or till veneer; and landform types such as glaciofluvial plain or glaciofluvial complex. Surficial materials maps can be used to help identify valuable rocks for sculpting.
