Specialization in Personal Services

View this map

Abstract

Personal services include beauty salons, dry cleaners and travel agents on the convenience side, and car rental and photography on the specialty side. This map shows the difference between the actual employment in personal services and the expected level, based on the city's population and income. Generally, personal services are closely linked to the nearby market, with only a modest preference for larger centres and higher income areas. Everyone uses them; they are everywhere. After the effects of the market are removed, specialization does occur in smaller places in western Canada and the Atlantic provinces that have extensive service areas, whereas most urban centres in southern Ontario and Quebec have smaller trade areas and are thus relatively deficient in these services.

Personal services are those services used by local consumers for their families and homes. They include, beauty salons, dry cleaners and travel agents as examples of convenience services, and car rental and photography as examples of specialty services. In general, the distribution of personal services shows a close link to the nearby market, with only a modest preference for larger centres and higher income areas. Consumers are unlikely to travel very far for such routine services.

Geographical Description

On this map, the size of the circles is proportional to the population of the market, while the degree of specialization is shown by the colour in the legend. The distribution of personal services is very much like the map of the market, so that specialization in personal services is almost entirely due to variations in the size of the external trade (market) area of the city. As a result, rural and urban differences in the specialization of personal services are weaker than for business or financial services, as are the variations among the metropolitan suburbs.
