- Quadrangle
- A four-sided area bounded by lines of longitude and latitude which define the extent of a map sheet, usually are in a map series. For example, a 30' longitude x 15' latitude quadrangle is used as the standard dimensions for the 1:50 000 scale National Topographic System map series of Geomatics Canada.
- Quadrant
- (1) One-fourth of a full circle, or a sector of a circle having an arc of 90°.
(2) A map of an area on the Earth's surface which is a quadrangle having the dimensions 15' longitude x 15' latitude.
- Quadrillage
- A common reference grid made up of two sets of equally-spaced straight parallel lines, intersecting at right angles, which divide the surface into squares or rectangles. The lines, or the spaces between them can be identified with numbers or letters.
- Qualitative data
- Basic information that is classified without rank or hierarchy. For example, nominal data such as the distribution of different types of soil, vegetation, or employment is qualitative.
- Quality control
- A process based on a set of specified standards used to evaluate the quality of a product and to ensure that the product of the producing agency has attained the established standard of quality. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a method of quality control which aims to have work of acceptable quality built into the product or service from its start, with the idea of eliminating the need for quality inspection on a mass basis. Through management leadership and team work, the goal is constant improvement in quality and productivity.
- Quantitative data
- Data that is based on measurement and usually described by numerical value. Quantitative data can be at any of the ordinal, interval or ratio levels of measurement.
