  1. Why would I as an international buyer want to do business with EDC?
As Canada's export agency, we bring you an integrated team approach, providing you with comprehensive solutions to meet your trade financing and political insurance needs. Our industry specialists can help you identify Canadian firms with the technology, service and commitment that you require. We can:
  • providing you with financing support

  • protect your project from exposure to political risks

  • give you access to EDC's economic and political risk analysis, enabling you to make faster and more informed business decisions

  2. How does EDC decide if it will support a trade deal?
It depends on a number of key factors including country risk, contract length, type of good or service being exported, buyer risk, regulatory and political restrictions and international trade standards. Successfully addressing these issues and enabling you to purchase Canadian goods and services is one of our core strengths.

  3. What is political risk insurance and how will it help me?
We offer this type of insurance to Canadian exporters as well as to financial institutions and project sponsors to help protect against various risks associated with overseas investment and loan syndications. Risk include: not being able to convert local earnings into hard currency; inability to transfer earnings out of the country; expropriation and political violence. Our policies can provide protection up to 15 years, a major advantage in a longer term project.

  4. Why should I consider using Canadian suppliers?
Canada is quickly taking its place as a world leader in developing ground-breaking technologies in telecommunications, resource management, aerospace, environment, and software development--sectors of particular interest and importance to emerging and developing markets. Coupled with this expertise, is our highly skilled and trained workforce, people dedicated to the entrepreneurial spirit of developing the right solutions at the right price.

  5. I'm a foreign buyer and need a list of Canadian suppliers/buyers?
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade can help. For a complete list Canada's trade commissioners in consulates and embassies, visit: http://www.infoexport.gc.ca/eservices-e.asp

The International Business Opportunities Centre (IBOC) is the export opportunities sourcing centre for Team Canada Inc, a partnership of government departments and agencies working together to provide trade services to Canadian exporters. Business leads from Canada's trade commissioners are collected and researched by IBOC. The opportunities are then disseminated daily via the Virtual Trade Commissioner (VTC) to Canadian companies who have registered via the VTC website at www.infoexport.gc.ca. The service is free of charge and is exclusive to Canadian companies.

Another valuable source of information is Industry Canada’s Strategis website.

If you are interested in a particular sector, check out a select number of industry profiles on EDC’s web site. This lists some of the Canadian companies involved in each sector and various projects they’ve been involved with.
