GST/HST NETFILE

Selected businesses can file their goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) returns directly to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) over the Internet using GST/HST NETFILE. The latest convenient and innovative filing option in CCRA's suite of electronic services, GST/HST NETFILE is fast, easy to use, and available six days a week, except holidays. It reduces processing time and ends the need to mail a paper return, resulting in faster refunds.

Who can use GST/HST NETFILE?
GST/HST NETFILE is available to selected businesses. A business is eligible to use the service if:

  • it has at least a one-year GST/HST filing history;
  • an access code is printed on its GST/HST return;
  • the name, Business Number, reporting period, and address printed on the GST/HST return are correct;
  • the return being filed results in a nil balance or a refund of $10,000 or less;
  • it is not filing a rebate application form with the return; and
  • the return being filed does not include a claim for a rebate amount on line 111.

Since GST/HST NETFILE is not yet able to receive payments electronically with returns, the service is not available to businesses that have an amount owing. Those that are not eligible to use GST/HST NETFILE can use the GST/HST electronic data interchange (EDI) filing and remitting program instead. EDI technology allows businesses to file returns and send payments to the CCRA through a participating financial institution.

How does the service work?
Completing a GST/HST return online is as simple as completing a paper return, and filing it can be done in just a few minutes. Once the online form has been completed and submitted, a confirmation number is immediately provided as proof that the return has been filed successfully.

Is GST/HST NETFILE secure?
The CCRA uses sophisticated encryption technology and security procedures to protect personal information at all times and to ensure that the data is transmitted safely. Also, the access code issued to an eligible business is a one-time security key used to identify a specific GST/HST return. A new access code is required for each filing period. The access code should not be given to anyone who is not authorized to act on behalf of the GST/HST registrant.
