Points to Remember…
Attitude (It really makes a difference!)
What is the first thing to do in starting a job-search? Develop an enthusiastic, positive attitude. Think of it as a journey, the chance to move ahead in your career, to find that ideal job that matches your talents, skills and abilities.
The keys to a positive attitude are self-esteem, self-confidence and self-knowledge:
Self-esteem
Think of all the positive aspects of your personal and professional growth: accomplishments, education, experiences. Reflect on your successes and what it took to achieve them.
Self-confidence
Think of all the things you know how to do: technical capabilities and the many personal attributes or traits that distinguish you as a vital person.
Self-knowledge
Think of who you really are and what you have become over the years, how you have developed; what motivates you,
drives you, interests you; how you would describe yourself in terms of style and personality; what you most like
to do and what you do best.
This will help contribute to a positive attitude and prepare you for the practical aspects of looking for a job
by defining your knowledge, skills and competencies.
The next step is to form relationships. Keep a professional relationship with your current or most
recent employer and co-workers, regardless of the circumstances. Look for the positive. If you are
just coming out of college or university, make sure you leave with your friendships and collegial
relationships intact. Many will become useful contacts for your networking activities.
Also think about effectively organizing your time and efforts. This means having a well-defined
plan that keeps you focused on the critical tasks and creates a sense of purpose in all that you do.
