  Disclosure

In 1999, EDC began work on developing a formal set of disclosure practices that would strike an appropriate balance between the release of information relevant to EDC’s public accountability and the need to respect customers’ commercial interests. After considerable research, benchmarking, use of outside consultants and extensive stakeholder consultations, EDC implemented a final Disclosure Policy in October 2001.

The policy is based upon three governing principles:
  • disclosure of information on business activities is intended to enhance EDC's public accountability
  • EDC will implement this policy in a manner that will not jeopardize its pursuit of its legislative mandate
  • confidential information will be protected
In 2005, a policy review was initiated to reflect changes to the OECD Common Approaches on Environment and Officially Supported Export Credits; recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General in its 2004 examination of EDC’s environmental practices; EDC’s own experience implementing the Policy since 2001; and constructive comments received through ongoing engagement with stakeholders. Revisions to the Policy were approved by EDC’s Board of Directors in November, 2005 following an 80-day public comment period. The revisions include:
  • Requiring project sponsors to provide environmental information 30 days before final approval for projects in countries outside the G-7. EDC reserves the right to waive the 30-day requirement, but will publicly disclose the explanation justifying the exemption.
  • For countries of the G-7, EDC will seek to make environmental information available 30 days in advance of final commitment, as is current practice.
  • narrowing the dollar ranges when reporting the volume of an individual transaction.
