2005 - 09 - 22 Communiqué - Order Amending Schedules I and IV to the Weights and Measures Act (SOR/2005-277), in PDF format, 113 KB
Modifications have been made to Schedules I and IV to the Weights and Measures Act (the Act). These modifications also address the reference standards and prefixes referred to in Sections 3 and 4 of the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act.
In Part I to Schedule I to the Act, the definition of candela, the unit of luminous intensity, has been modified to be consistent with the internationally recognized definition.
The prefixes yotta, zetta, zepto, and yocto, and their symbols have been added to Part V to Schedule I to reflect the infinitely large and the infinitely small.
The symbol “g” for gram has been added to the explanatory note to Part V of Schedule I. This amendment establishes a legal symbol for the gram (not a basic SI unit), since it is one-thousandth of a kilogram (a basic SI unit).
Schedule IV to the Act has been amended by inserting reference standards used to measure temperature and by updating the list of reference standards for the measurement of electricity and gas, by deleting obsolete standards and inserting new reference standards.
The proposed amendments will have no effect on enforcement activities and will require no new compliance or enforcement mechanisms.
