News Releases

  1. Gross domestic product by industry, November 2005
Economic activity increased by 0.2 percent for the second consecutive month in November, mostly on the strength of retail trade, tourism-related industries, construction and a rebound in educational services. Decreases in wholesale trade, manufacturing and utilities offset part of the gains.

  2. EDC survey shows export confidence faltering
Export Development Canada (EDC) released the results of its semi-annual Trade Confidence Index (TCI) survey, which suggest that the confidence of Canada's exporters has faltered as Canadian companies begin to feel the challenge of a slowing world economy. "Looking to the future, exporter confidence is likely to continue to decrease as tougher credit conditions take hold and demand begins to slow in line with the global economy," said Stephen Poloz, Senior Vice-President of Corporate Affairs and Chief Economist.

  3. BDC President, Jean-René Halde, talks to financial market professionals about business ownership transition planning
Despite some alarming statistics regarding population aging, many entrepreneurs do not plan their business ownership transition. As a result, some of them will decide, willingly or unwillingly, to sell their business without any assurance of continuity, gradually reduce their operations, or even close their business. At a luncheon meeting organized by the Cercle finance et placement du Québec, Jean-René Halde, President of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), talked to an audience of nearly one hundred financial specialists about the major challenge for Canadian entrepreneurs of business ownership transition planning.

  4. 100 Years of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
The IEC came into being on 26-27 June 1906 in London, UK, and ever since has been giving the very best global standards to the world's electrotechnical industries. The IEC thanks industry, government, academia, end-users, and everyone else who has been involved from around the world for 100 years of commitment and partnership.

  5. Top travel agents to visit Ontario: FVW Counter Trophy 2006
Germany's leading travel-trade magazines, FVW (circulation 31,100) is bringing its annual trivia event to Canada. While this may seem somewhat – well, trivial – the FVW Counter Trophy is anything but; these contests are annual events (recent locations include California, Greece and the Canary Islands) which attract over 1100 participating travel agents. The "Trophy" looks to find the best team of agents – whether home-based, agency, online or otherwise – and build on their knowledge of the host destination.

  6. New programs and partnerships fuel collaboration with international researchers
While international collaboration has always been part of the scholarly endeavour, economic globalization and communications technology are both accelerating its scope and pace and increasing its impact.

Articles and Commentaries

  1. Exporting Environmental Products and Services
Canada has developed specialized capabilities in the areas of environmental management, products and services, and is capitalizing on that knowledge by exporting abroad. Find out how Canadian firms are helping other countries overcome environmental challenges in this article.

  2. Trade Confidence Falters
Economists love numbers, and the cross they bear is that many of the numbers they receive are already months old when they are published. That is why it is useful to supplement real economic statistics with survey information – information from real people, making real decisions, right now.

Events

  1. A Canadian forest industries showcase in New Zealand
Rotorua, New Zealand, 9-11 March 2006

Canadian Export Development Inc., in cooperation with the Canadian Consulate and Trade Office in Auckland, New Zealand, is organizing a Canadian pavilion for the Forest Industries 2006 (FI 2006) International Exhibition and Conference. FI 2006 is Australasia's largest and most innovative forest industry exhibition. It will be combined with an international conference on March 8, followed by a three-day international exhibition and an in-forest harvesting equipment demonstration.

Canadian companies will have the chance to display their products and services under one umbrella as they pursue business opportunities in the forest industry in both New Zealand and Australia. The Canadian Consulate and Trade Office in Auckland will invite key decision makers and buyers from both countries to visit the pavilion. Canadian suppliers of forestry harvesting, saw milling and value-added wood processing machinery, material handling systems and ancillary equipment or services who are interested in the Australia and New Zealand export markets should consider exhibiting at FI 2006.

To ensure the success of Canadian companies, the Canadian Consulate in Auckland will provide a value-added business program that will include the following pre-show services: preliminary partnering research, market and visit information, and lists of specific key contacts.

For more information, contact Robert Grison, Director of Operations, Canadian Export Development Inc. by telephone at (613) 825-9916 or by email at cced@sympatico.ca.

APEC TEL 33 will give participants the opportunity to network with key dignitaries and business representatives from the 21 member economies. More importantly, APEC TEL serves as a forum of influence as a trade, technology and policy leader in several priority markets. Some of the objectives for the TEL group include:

  4. Designbuild Australia 2006: 20th International Building and Design Expo
    Melbourne Australia, 28-31 May 2006

Canadian Export Development (CED), in cooperation with the Consulate and Trade Office of Canada in Auckland, New Zealand responsible for the building sector, invites Canadian companies to participate in Designbuild Australia 2006, the 20th International Building and Design Expo, May 28-31, 2006, Melbourne, Australia.

Designbuild Australia 2006 is the biggest and best-known trade show in Australasia for building, building products and design sectors. Participation at Designbuild Australia 2006 provides an excellent opportunity to generate sales and initiate business relationships with Australian and Asia Pacific partners as well as companies from the UK and Europe. Canadian companies will display their products and services in the Canadian Pavilion.

The Consulate and Trade Office of Canada is providing a value-added business program around the event to ensure the success of Canadian companies. The final program is tailored to meet companies' needs and will include some or all of the following pre-show services: preliminary partnering research; market information; visit information and lists of key contacts specific to a company's business. The Consulate will provide Australian and New Zealand contacts with advance notice of companies' attendance at Designbuild Australia 2006 and work with each of them prior to the event to ensure that one-to-one meetings are arranged with local businesses that are most likely to be of benefit to them.

Overall opportunities for Canadian building products exports exist for the provision of niche technologically innovative high-grade building products and materials. Some of the products in demand include insulation materials, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly building products, wood-based building products and Do-It-Yourself home improvement components. Australia is also an ideal place for Canadian companies to do business due to the similarities in Canadian and Australian culture, language, and business practices. These factors also make Australia an excellent vantage point from which to expand sales to the Asia-Pacific region.
