Abstract |
The Landcover Generalization project was created in response to the original imagery's
large storage needs and because it was impossible to render in its original vector format.
LANSAT 7 imagery was collected during the Western Grains Transition Payment Program.
Currently,
the imagery is stored both as images and in the preferred vector format. This vector data is stored
in
1:50,000 map sheet tiles. If the user wishes to view a specific area they must first identify the
1:50,000 map sheet, where the point of interest resides, then browse to the desired vectorized tile
of the imagery. Also, this 30 m vectorized imagery (product L07 in GIS_LIB) becomes
computationally impossible on the desktop computer when multiple mapsheets are drawn. Spatial analysis and
modeling at a Provincial or Western Canada extent are impossible in the mapsheet format.
The Generalized Landcover is a seamless vector coverage of the agricultural extent of Western
Canada, which may be used with desktop GIS applications. An algorithm was created using the
processing tools of the ArcINFO GRID module. A series of AML's and digital rules have been
implemented in case new satellite imagery is acquired.
The results of the Generalization are quite interesting and it has been suggested that the
percentage of some Landcover types in the Generalized format (such as Cropland) may actually be more
accurate than the original imagery. This Generalization has become an excellent example of a value-added
remote sensing product. |
Purpose |
It is intended for large scale mapping and analysis of landuse. |
