History of Agriculture and Agri-Food CanadaThe Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada was established by the Department of Agriculture Act, passed by Parliament and given Royal Assent on May 22, 1868. This Act, amended from time to time, is the authority under which the present Department operates. In addition to agriculture, the Minister, at the time the Honourable J.C. Chapais, had other wide national responsibilities including immigration, public health, censuses and statistics, patents, copyrights, arts and manufactures, and industrial designs and trademarks. Before 1867, there was a Bureau of Agriculture of the Province of Canada, and thus the department, in effect, predates Confederation.
