Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice from COGEMA Resources Inc (COGEMA) seeking an amendment to an existing licence to authorize the expansion of the JEB Mill at the McClean Lake Operation to receive and process Cigar Lake ore. The McClean Lake Operation is currently licensed with a Uranium Mine Operating Licence under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. The CNSC has also received notice from Cameco Corporation seeking approval to transfer ore from the Cigar Lake Project to the JEB Mill.

The project proposed by COGEMA and Cameco is to transfer uranium ore slurry from Cigar Lake to McClean Lake, and to expand the existing JEB Mill to receive and process Cigar Lake ore slurry, and to continue to receive and process McClean Lake ore. COGEMA also proposes to increase approved annual JEB Mill production to 10.8 million pounds U3O8 from all ore sources.

Before the Commission makes its decision on COGEMA and Cameco’s proposal, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.
