Project Description
COGEMA Resources Inc. has applied to the CNSC for the revocation of its current operating licence and for the issuance of a new operating licence for the McClean Lake Operation. Under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the CNSC will complete an environmental assessment of the project before deciding whether to proceed with a licensing decision on COGEMA's application. Based on the results of the environmental assessment, the CNSC will determine if the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, taking into account the application of appropriate mitigation measures.
The McClean Lake Operation is a uranium mine and mill facility located in the Athabasca basin area of Saskatchewan. The nearest permanent community is Wollaston Post, about 50 km from the mine site on the other side of Wollaston Lake.
The main facilities and operations at the McClean Lake Operation are an open pit mine near Sue Lake (Sue site), the JEB mill located near the mined-out JEB pit (JEB site), a tailings management facility, various supporting facilities for activities such as tailings management and water treatment, and site infrastructure such as roads, electricity distribution and camp facilities.
Steps Ahead:
- Development of EA Guidelines (Scope Document)
- Approval of EA Guidelines by Commission following a public hearing
- Review of EA Study Report
- Preparation of Screening Report
- EA Decision by Commission following public hearing
