About International Trade Canada
International Trade Canada (ITCan) is responsible for positioning Canada as a world business leader for the 21st Century. ITCan accomplishes this by helping large and small Canadian companies expand and succeed internationally, by promoting Canada as a dynamic place to do business, and by negotiating and administering trade agreements.
Our services are offered through three broad business lines:

Please note that on December 7, 2004, International Trade Minister Jim Peterson introduced legislation in the House of Commons to officially create the Department of International Trade. In general, the Department of International Trade Act sets out the powers, duties and functions of the Minister of International Trade. It also establishes that ITCan is under the authority of the Minister of International Trade, who is responsible for the overall direction of the Department both in Canada and abroad.

Whether they are based in Canada or abroad, our employees strive to improve Canada's trade relations and activities. As with many federal
government departments, ITCan recruits most of its employees through the Public Service Commission. The Department also holds a yearly exam
to assess economic policy and trade candidates through our recruitment campaign.

Training
We also provide ongoing foreign service training and co-op programs for students, as well as language training for other departments and
the general public.
Contracting
Our Library holds a unique collection of material in areas of research relevant to International Trade Canada's
mandate. Selected services are available to members of the public conducting research in these subject
areas. The Library is open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding statutory holidays).
