NORTHERN PIPELINE AGENCY MOVES TO NATURAL RESOURCES CANADA
OTTAWA - The Government of Canada today announced the move of the Northern Pipeline Agency to the Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) portfolio. The Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, will be responsible for the management and direction of the Agency.
Minister Efford has extensive knowledge and experience on a variety of issues related to natural resources such as northern development, fisheries, and Aboriginal affairs. He has been serving Canadians since 1985 in both provincial and federal arenas.
The Northern Pipeline Agency, established in 1978, administers federal responsibilities in the planning and construction of the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System. The Agency will coordinate the Government of Canada's duties in preparation for a possible decision by industry to continue with the project's development. The Agency was previously overseen by the Minister of International Trade.
Mr. George Anderson, Deputy Minister of NRCan, is the newly appointed Commissioner of the Agency and will support Minister Efford in carrying out federal responsibilities in relation to the Alaska project. Mr. Anderson brings considerable experience and expertise to his appointment as Commissioner.
All Governor-in-Council appointments to the Northern Pipeline Agency are provided for under the Northern Pipeline Act.
