Our organization values and respects individuals with varied backgrounds and talents and encourages diversity in its workforce.

As a progressive employer, we have adopted a business casual dress policy as appropriate for most situations.

Comprehensive benefits

We offer our employees a very generous package of health, insurance and leave benefits, as well as an excellent pension plan.

Health and dental plans

We cover 80% of most medical expenses, including prescription drugs and vision care. Our dental plan pays 90% of routine treatments and 50% for major restorative, prosthodontic and orthodontic services.

Vacation

New employees receive three weeks of annual vacation. This increases to four weeks after eight years. Management receives four weeks of vacation leave on appointment.

Sick leave

Employees earn monthly sick leave credits to a total of 15 days per year. Unused sick leave credits are carried forward to future years.

Insurance

We have several excellent insurance plans available.

Disability benefits

Long-term disability insurance provides income-replacement benefits during lengthy periods of total disability at 70% of your annual salary.

Pension plan

As an employee of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada, you will participate in an excellent pension plan. Your benefits will depend on your age and years of service at retirement. The basic benefit is calculated at 2% x years of service x five-year average salary. This benefit is available as early as age 55. Your pension benefit is also indexed for increases to the consumer price index.

Employee assistance program (EAP)

The EAP is a voluntary, confidential counselling and referral service for employees and their families in areas such as marital issues, stress and anxiety, alcohol and drug dependency, as well as bereavement.

Ongoing career and professional development

We are committed to continuous, life-long learning for all of our employees. We offer a wide variety of programs to help you achieve your personal goals and contribute your best to the Office's effectiveness.

Professional development

We offer a top-notch professional development program that focusses on competency development and training related to work objectives through a combination of formal courses, self-directed studies and on-the-job training. We support you in performing your current job to the best of your ability and prepare you to assume greater responsibility in the future.

Professional and association fees

Your standing and involvement in your professional field are very important to us. We support your participation by paying your professional fees — e.g. accounting, engineering, law — as well as the annual fees required for membership in many professional associations.

Language training

You will have the opportunity to learn or improve your second language, French or English, during the workday. We offer in-house sessions in which small groups with the same level of language skills work with an instructor on a regular weekly basis.

Work-life values

We promote a reasonable work-life balance for all of our employees. We believe that supporting your personal needs and goals will contribute to a better and more productive workplace.

Flexible work arrangements

We offer a flexible work environment that allows for flextime, compressed workweeks and part-time arrangements. When your work requires that you work additional hours, we offer compensatory time off or, in some cases, paid overtime.

Family-friendly arrangements

Generous arrangements exist for family-related absences such as:

  • birth or adoption of a child
  • marriage leave
  • care of sick family members
  • bereavement leave

There are also provisions to cover maternity and parental leave, care and nurturing of pre-school age children, long-term care of a parent, and other personal needs. For example, parents are provided with 50 weeks of combined maternity/parental benefits at 93% of salary on the birth or adoption of a child.

Respectful workplace

We take pride in our workplace in which individuals with varied backgrounds and talents are respected and valued. We value diversity in our workforce and we encourage members of the designated groups — women, visible minorities, Aboriginal persons and persons with disabilities — to apply and self-identify on their application.

We are committed to reflecting employment equity ideals in both our workforce and workplace.
