BACKGROUNDER

EnerGuide energy efficiency rating system

Since 1978, Canadians have relied on the EnerGuide label as a credible source of information on the energy consumption of major electrical appliances. EnerGuide ratings are based on standard testing procedures established by accredited certification organizations. For heating, ventilating and air-conditioning equipment (HVAC), the ratings are published on the back page of manufacturers' product literature. A horizontal bar scale shows where the energy efficiency of a particular product ranks in comparison to the typical efficiency ratings of other equipment sold in Canada — the higher the rating, the greater the energy efficiency.

Contractors have been equipped with the supportive tools to help consumers choose the energy-efficient model that meets their needs. Using these tools, the contractor can quantify and predict the heating and cooling energy cost savings and even calculate the approximate payback period.

HVAC Toolbox

The HVAC Toolbox contains the HVAC ADVISOR version 2 software and User's Guide. The software is an interactive program that allows a user to perform the following functions:

  • select the type of house construction (detached, semi-detached or townhouse);
  • have the option to supply heating and cooling load data or to have the HVAC advisor do the calculations for you; and
  • select and show comparisons of two types of systems (for example: heat pump vs furnace or furnace vs furnace).

Sample consumer information sheets explaining the EnerGuide rating program for three types of HVAC equipment are included in the Toolbox. Also included are a truck decal and stickers for letterhead and business cards to identify to consumers those contractors who have energy efficiency knowledge and who can determine their clients' HVAC equipment needs with the use of HVAC ADVISOR version 2.
