NATURAL RESOURCES CANADA RELEASES THE 1999 FUEL CONSUMPTION DATA

OTTAWA — The latest information to help Canadian drivers make economical — and environmentally sound — 1999 vehicle purchases is now available. Ralph Goodale, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, today officially released the Office of Energy Efficiency's fuel consumption data for 1999 model year vehicles.

Canadians can use the information to compare the fuel consumption ratings and the estimated annual cost of fuel for the vehicles they are considering. By choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets their needs, they can save money. At the same time, they will be doing their part to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, a major greenhouse gas linked to climate change.

"The 1999 fuel consumption data provides consumers with a useful reference guide to help them shop for a fuel-efficient vehicle," said Minister Goodale. "Decreasing fuel consumption is one way to minimize the impact our cars have on the environment and will help Canada reduce its greenhouse gas emissions."

The fuel consumption data for 1999 are now available on the Auto$mart web site. Within a few weeks, the data will be published in the 1999 Fuel Consumption Guide by Natural Resources Canada with the assistance of Transport Canada and the vehicle manufacturers. Consumers can order their free copy now by calling 1-800-387-2000. The Guide will also be available at most new car dealers, provincial and territorial licensing agencies, and at the Caisses populaires Desjardins in Quebec or by writing to Energy Publications, c/o Canada Communication Group, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0S9.
