Government of Canada at the Eighth Conference of Parties on Climate Change
The Eighth Conference of the Parties (COP 8) to the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) took place in New Delhi, India,
from October 23 to November 1, 2002.
The UNFCCC was a first step in the international effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and was agreed to at the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992. The Conference of Parties (COP) meets annually to review the implementation of the Convention and prepare for the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol.
COP 8 negotiations focused on a variety of technical issues related to
the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol, and is expected to draw some
5,000 participants from the Convention’s 187 Parties. Canada was an active
participant.
