NEW DIRECTORS AND MEMBERS APPOINTED TO THE CANADA FOUNDATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TECHNOLOGY

OTTAWA — Today, the Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal and the Minister of the Environment, the Honourable David Anderson announced the appointment of the Chairperson as well as the initial Directors and Members of the Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology.

"The Chairperson, Directors and Members have each made significant contributions in their respective fields and will bring a wide range of knowledge to the Board," said Minister Dhaliwal, the Minister responsible for the Foundation. "I am confident that the Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology will play a pivotal role in the coming years in helping Canada reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and improve its air quality."

"Knowledge and innovation are the foundations for achieving sustainable development and each of the new Members and Directors has proven capabilities in this regard," said Minister Anderson. "The Government of Canada is taking a long-term, systematic approach to sustainable development, enabling us to address immediate problems, while at the same time ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations. Forging partnerships, such as those which the Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology will encourage, is an important step in addressing climate change and air-quality issues."

Funding for the Canada Foundation for Sustainable Development Technology was announced in the Government of Canada's 2000 budget. The initial amount of $100 million for the Foundation will foster partnerships between companies, universities, private-sector research institutes and not-for-profit corporations to develop and demonstrate leading-edge technologies that will achieve environmental benefits, particularly technologies which address climate change and air-quality issues.

The Foundation will be an arm's-length, not-for-profit corporation, consisting of a 15-person Board of Directors, including the Chairperson, and 15 Members of the Foundation. The Government of Canada appoints the Chairperson, six of the Directors and seven Members of the Foundation.

Mr. James Stanford has been appointed as Chairperson for the Foundation. The new Directors are T. M. (Mike) Apsey, Alain Caillé, Dr. David Johnston, Dr. Jane E. Pagel, Dee Parkinson-Marcoux and Dr. Elizabeth Parr-Johnston. The new Members are Chief Mary Louise Bernard, Dr. Indira V. Samarasekera, Katherine Trumper and Judith A. Whittick.

The Government will appoint the three remaining Members shortly. Once this is done, the seven government-appointed Members will appoint the eight remaining Members. The 15 Members will then appoint the remaining eight Directors.

The Foundation will prepare annual reports which the Minister of Natural Resources will table in Parliament.
