BACKGROUNDER

CANADA FOUNDATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - BIOGRAPHIES

James M. Stanford — Mr. Stanford, 64, is President of Stanford Resource Management Inc. located in Calgary and retired President, CEO and Dirctor of Petro-Canada, having served in that position from 1993 to 2000. Mr. Stanford served as President, CEO and Director of Petro-Canada from 1990 to 1993. Prior to joining Petro-Canada in 1978, Mr. Stanford worked with Mobil Oil Canada Ltd. for 19 years in numerous engineering and managerial assignments.
Mr. Stanford sits on the boards of PanCanadian, Petroleum, NOVA Chemicals, Inco Limited, B.C. Gas, Inc., OMERS Resources, Iogen Corporation and Sunfire Energy Corporation. Mr. Stanford also serves on the Boards of the Mount Royal College Foundation, the Alberta Performing Arts Stabilization Fund, as well as with a variety of other industry and community organizations.

T. M. (Mike) Apsey — Mr. Apsey is a Registered Professional Forester. In 1984, after six years of service with the Province of British Columbia, he became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Forest Industries, the position he held until he retired in April 1998. He holds directorships on national and international organizations, both business and academic, and is currently Chair of the National Forest Strategy Coalition. In 1998, Mr. Apsey was awarded the Canadian Institute of Forestry's International Achievement Award for "outstanding contribution towards international forestry development."

Alain Caillé — Mr. Caillé is Vice-Rector, Research, Université de Montréal. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Government of Quebec's Fonds FCAR, a fund for training researchers and assisting research, as well as several other boards of national and international bodies. He also sat on the Board of Directors of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. A founding member of the Regional Entrepreneurship Centre of the Estrie, an associate in the creation of Enviro-access, an environmental technology transfer centre, a promoter of Innovatech-Sud of Québec and a member of the Board of Administration of the Québec Biomass Validation Centre, Mr. Caillé is a specialist in technology transfer.

David Johnston — Dr. Johnston is president of the University of Waterloo. He was President of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada and of the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec. Dr. Johnston was the founding chair of the National Round Table on Environment and the Economy. He is the author of 12 books, holds honorary doctorates from 10 universities and has been awarded the Order of Canada (Companion).

Dr. Jane E. Pagel — Dr. Pagel is Vice-President of Corporate and Government Affairs at Jacques Whitford Environment Ltd., an environmental science and engineering company, with offices throughout Canada and abroad. A member of several boards, including the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology and the Ontario Premier's Research Excellence Awards, Dr. Pagel is also a board member at Maxxam Analytics Inc. and the International Air & Waste Management Association.

Dee Parkinson-Marcoux — Ms. Parkinson-Marcoux has been President and CEO of Ensyn Energy Corporation, an innovative, private-sector R&D firm, since 1998. Ms. Parkinson-Marcoux worked for several years in the mineral industry before commencing a career in the oil patch. She has worked for PetroCanada, Suncor and was President of Gulf Heavy Oil from 1997 to 1998. Ms. Parkinson-Marcoux sits on a number of boards, including the National Bank of Canada, SNC Lavalin Inc., Petroleum Research Technology Centre, Ensyn Group Inc. (Biomass); Placer Dome Inc. and SPP (USA) Inc.

Dr. Elizabeth Parr-Johnston — Since 1996, Dr. Parr-Johnston has been President and Vice Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick, as well as Professor of Economics at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. Over her career, Dr. Parr-Johnston has held senior management positions with Inco Ltd., Shell Canada Ltd. and the Government of Canada. Outside of academia, Dr. Parr-Johnston holds directorships on several corporate boards, including the Bank of Nova Scotia, Empire Company Ltd., Nova Scotia Power Inc., BioAlantech and Emera Ltd. Previous boards on which she has sat include the Council of Canadian Unity, Mutual Life, the Investment Dealers Association and the North/South Institute.

Chief Mary Louise Bernard — Chief Bernard is a member of the Mi'kmaq Nation. Early in her career, Chief Bernard was employed as an education counsellor and also as a membership clerk for the Wagmatcook Band Council. She later moved to a financial management position and worked in this capacity for several years. Since 1994, Chief Bernard has held the position of Chief of the Wagmatcook Reserve. One of only three female Chiefs in Nova Scotia, Chief Bernard was recently appointed to the Assembly of First Nations Chiefs Committee on Accountability.

Dr. Indira V. Samarasekera — Dr. Samarasekera is currently Vice President, Research, at the University of British Columbia. She has received awards including the Williams and the Ablett Prizes from the Materials Society in Great Britain, the Killam Prize and McDowell Medal from UBC for research excellence, the E.W.R. Steacie Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the B.C. Science Council Award for New Frontiers in Research. Dr. Samarasekera is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum; and the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Katherine Trumper — Ms. Trumper has extensive experience in senior management positions in the Government of Nunavut, and its predecessor, the Government of the Northwest Territories. Starting in 1980, Ms. Trumper's career follows a series of progressively responsible positions in government, involving the implementation of tourism strategies serving communities in the eastern Arctic. Ms. Trumper was the Deputy Minister of the Department of Sustainable Development, Nunavut from 1998-2001.

Judith A. Whittick — Ms. Whittick is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. Ms. Whittick has been a member of numerous boards, including PRECARN, the Engineering and Applied Science Advisory Council, the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program Advisory Board and the Committee on Research Partnerships of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
