New appointments to the National Council of Welfare

OTTAWA, June 13, 2005 — The Honourable Ken Dryden, Minister of Social Development, today announced the appointment of Ms. Gail MacDougall of Nova Scotia and Dr. Joseph Tietz of British Columbia to the National Council of Welfare.

"The experiences Ms. MacDougall and Dr. Tietz bring from the field of education, and their personal commitment to social welfare, make them important new members of the National Council of Welfare," said Minister Dryden.

Ms. MacDougall has held various positions related to the social services and educational fields over the past 40 years. She holds a Master’s degree in social work and is an assistant professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Dr. Tietz, who holds a doctorate in clinical and community psychology, is the Executive Director of the Jewish Family Service Agency in Vancouver. Dr. Tietz has extensive experience in the spheres of non-profit management, program planning, and development.

The National Council of Welfare was established by the Government Organization Act in 1969. Members are appointed from across Canada and include both service providers and service beneficiaries. The Council’s mandate encompasses issues related to social security and matters relating to low-income Canadians.
