How to obtain a Canadian travel document

The following checklist will help identify the steps required to obtain either a travel document or a certificate of identity.

Application requirements checklist

To ensure timely processing of your application, please be sure to submit all the necessary documents with your application. To obtain a travel document, you must include the following:

  1. All FOUR pages of the application form completed and signed. (Find out where to obtain application forms).
  2. Two identical passport photos taken within the last 12 months.
  3. Signatures from an eligible guarantor on the application form and on one of your photos.
  4. Original proof of immigration status in Canada.
  5. Any valid or expired passports or travel documents (originals only).
  6. Documents to support your identity

If you submit original supporting documents, they will be returned to you. If you are submitting photocopies, your guarantor must sign and date the photocopies to indicate that the originals have been seen.

  7. A copy of the official receipt for fees paid (IMM 5401) if you have applied for Canadian citizenship.
  8. The appropriate fee.
  9. BOTH labels completed.

Note: Each application is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Additional information and documentation may be requested of you.

All documents submitted with your application for a travel document must be originals, except when explicitly indicated otherwise; photocopies will not be accepted.
