Tips for Searching with Job Bank Search

At its simplest, a query can be just a word, a location or a phrase. But with the tips on this page, you can expand the focus of your job search to give you more complete results. These tips will get you started with basic query language and acquaint you with the full power of Job Bank Search. Furthermore, it gives you the opportunity to search the entire content of a job offer such as the order number, the date and the job title. This will allow you to find information about jobs in Canada quickly!
  • If you wish to view jobs advertisements for a specific city, we suggest you choose the 'Keyword Search' option using the city's name as the search criteria. Click "Search Now". If you are unable to find a job that matches your career objectives in your immediate area, you could try to search under a nearby community and click on "Search Now".

  • Look for words with the same prefix. For example, in your query form type car* to find caregiver, carpenter, care worker, etc..

  • Search for all forms of a word. For example, in the form type man** to find manager, sales clerk-men's wear, service man-hydraulic, etc..

  • Search with the keyword NEAR, rather than AND, for words close to each other. For example, both of these queries, system and manager and system near manager, look for the words system and manager in the same posting. But with NEAR, the returned jobs are ranked in order of proximity: The closer together the words are, the higher the rank of that page.

  • Refine your queries with the AND NOT keywords to exclude certain text from your search. For example, if you want to find all instances of manager but not office manager entries, write the following query:

    manager AND NOT office

  • Add the OR keyword to find all instances of either one word or another, for example:

    analyst OR programmer

This query finds all jobs that mention analyst or programmer.

  • Put quotation marks around keywords if you want Job Bank Search to take them literally. For instance, if you type the following query:

    "office near manager"

Job Bank Search will literally look for the complete phrase office near manager. But if you type the same query without the quotation marks:

    office near manager

Job Bank Search searches all documents for the words office and manager.
