Hon. Aileen Carroll,
Minister of
International Cooperation
Aileen Carroll is Canada’s Minister of International Cooperation and Member of Parliament for Barrie. Her portfolio includes responsibility for the Canadian International Development Agency.

Since her appointment as Minister in December 2003, Ms. Carroll has taken on her Cabinet responsibilities with commitment and resolve.

She played a key role shaping the Government of Canada’s recently launched International Policy Statement, which sets out clear directions and ambitious targets for Canada’s development cooperation program. She is a recognized leader in the global fight against AIDS, pressing for focused action on support for women and girls, and is a member by invitation of the UNAIDS Council of Leaders on Women and HIV/AIDS. She is Leadership Co-Chair of the 2006 International AIDS Conference, which will be held in Toronto.

In addition to responsibilities relating to her portfolio, Minister Carroll serves on the Global Affairs and the Security, Public Health and Emergencies Cabinet committees.

First elected to the House of Commons in 1997, Ms. Carroll was re-elected in the 2000 and 2004 general elections. She has been an active parliamentarian, serving as a member of several Standing Committees (Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Environment and Sustainable Development, Justice and Human Rights, and Health), chairing the Government Caucus on the Environment and Sustainable Development, and acting as Vice-Chair of the non-partisan Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association.

Prior to her election to the House of Commons, Ms. Carroll was a city councillor in Barrie and was for many years a partner in a small manufacturing business. She is a graduate of St. Mary's and York Universities. She and her husband Kevin have two children.
