Student Guide Program in France 2006

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Student Guide Program in France is an opportunity for young Canadians to live and work in France for a four-month period while at the same time experiencing Canada's rich military history. The work involves giving guided tours in battlefield terrain and underground tunnels, sometimes in adverse weather conditions and providing operational support to visitors centres on site. Guides are hired for one of the following periods:

Period 1: April 24, 2006 - August 27, 2006
Period 2: August 21, 2006 - December 10, 2006
Period 3: January 8, 2007 - May 6, 2007

DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Veterans Affairs Canada

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF POSITION: Canadian National Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, both of which are located in France.

THE DEPARTMENT WILL MAKE THE MAJORITY OF REQUESTS FOR REFERRALS BY THIS DATE: Please be aware that the department will initially access the inventory on specific dates:

November 14, 2005 - Period # 1 and # 2
September 4, 2006 - Period # 3

Note: Candidates for Period # 1 and # 2 will be considered at the same time

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT: 16 - 18 weeks

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be bilingual and possess excellent oral communications skills in both English and French.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: (one of the following)
  1. 5201 - Historic Sites/Museum Interpretation
  2. 5202 - Tour Guide
  3. 5215 - Park Interpreter
  4. 5223 - Interpretation of Nature
  5. 5232 - Guide Interpreter

Successful candidates must possess or be willing to obtain:

  1. A standard First Aid Certificate,
  2. A valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate,
  3. An International Automobile Driving Permit.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

To apply students must:

  • Complete the on-line FSWEP application;
  • Provide a resume;
  • Provide two letters of reference from persons who are not related to you. Although not mandatory, it is recommended that at least one reference letter highlight your work experience as it relates to this position.

Successful applicants may be eligible for reimbursement of all or part of their airfare up to $600. Students who were previously employed under this program may be called back to work as a guide. Consult the FSWEP Website for details about how to apply for re-employment.
