JOB DESCRIPTION:
YCW Student:
More than just a job, YCW offers secondary and post secondary students the opportunity to work at different Parks Canada’s offices, National Parks or National Historic Sites for the summer. All participants are expected to fully commit to the program's entire summer duration. Each YCW location offers unique work projects in a variety of fields. The following list outlines some jobs former participants performed:

  • Providing services for visitors (i.e. greeting and providing information)
  • Conducting surveys
  • Organizing and delivering children's nature camps
  • Various types of maintenance work (i.e. painting, trail work, etc)
  • Various office duties (i.e. filing, answering telephones, etc)
  • Study and data collection of biosphere plots and endangered species
  • Assisting conservation officers' work with the GPS (Global Positioning System)
  • Performing military parades and demonstrations in period costumes
  • Participating in archaeological digs

DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Parks Canada Agency

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF POSITION: Different Parks Canada offices, National Parks or National Historic Sites across Canada.

Parks Canada will start selection of referrals from the FSWEP database by the beginning of April.

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT:
YCW student : 8 to 16 weeks

FIELDS OF STUDY:
Various fields of study

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Participants in this program must be a secondary or post secondary student returning to full time studies.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
By agreeing to participate in the YCW program, participants are required to take part in development activities that may take place outside their regular work schedule. Hiring is conducted by each participating YCW location. Students can indicate their location preference but may be contacted by other locations. Security clearance will be required. Some post-secondary students hired for specific work projects may receive partial reimbursement for travel costs.

Jobs may specify certain conditions of employment, such as:

  • wearing a uniform or period costume
  • working shift work
