Since its inception in 1934, the Translation Bureau
has been meeting the translation and revision needs
of federal departments, agencies and those of both houses
of Parliament. This mandate was broadened in 1987 to
include vocal interpretation, sign-language interpretation
and terminology.
The Translation Bureau supports the Government of Canada
in its efforts to provide services to, and communicate
with, Canadians in the official language of their choice.
Support to Parliament is funded via appropriations and
all other services are on a fee-for-service basis.
The Translation Bureau:
- Provides translation, interpretation and terminology
services and products to the Parliament of Canada,
the Judiciary and federal departments and agencies
in both official languages and in other languages
as required.
- Upon request, provides these services to other governments
in Canada and to international organizations.
- Standardizes terminology within the federal government.
- Produces bilingual glossaries on a variety of subjects
and electronic terminology products such as TERMIUM
— the Government of Canada's linguistic databank
which includes over three million records in official
languages and approximately 100,000 Spanish records
as well as the Language Nook — a Web site accessible
to all public servants to help them work in both Official
Languages — and numerous writing tools.
- Plays a stewardship role in ensuring the security
of supply of linguistic services to the government,
supporting the development of the Canadian language
industry, promoting the development and dissemination
of standards in Canada, and providing functional specialist
support to other federal departments and agencies.
- Supports the implementation of Canada's Official
Languages Act.
- Partners with the Université du Québec
en Outaouais, Industry Canada, the National Research
Council of Canada and others to implement the Research
Centre for Language Technologies.
