New Canadian Representative to IASC
The Canadian Polar Commission welcomes Dr Grant Ingram, professor of physical oceanography and Associate Dean - Planning and Research in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia, as Canada’s new representative to the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC). Prof. Ingram previously taught at McGill University and was active in the research program of the Groupe Interuniversitaire de Recherches Oceanographiques du Quebec for twenty five years. He has been at UBC since 1997.

New Canadian Polar Commission Chairperson

The Canadian Polar Commission welcomes Dr Tom Hutchinson, a professor in the Environmental and Resource Study Program at Trent University, as the new Chairperson. Mr. Hutchinson, a well-respected botanist and authority in the area of climate change, has been involved in northern science throughout his teaching and research career. We look forward to working with him over the coming years.

Government of Canada Announces
$150 Million for Canadian Participation
in International Polar Year

EDMONTON (ALBERTA) - The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre), today announced Canada's participation in International Polar Year 2007 - 2008, the largest ever international research program in the polar regions. The Government of Canada will provide $150 million in new funding over six years to carry out an innovative, interdisciplinary program for International Polar Year (IPY) along with our international partners.

New Board of Directors Appointments

We would like to acknowledge the contributions of and thank outgoing Board members Peter Johnson (Vice-Chair 1999-2001, Chair 2002-2005), Michael Robinson (Chair 1999-2001) and Richard Binder (Vice-Chair 2002-2005) for their unwavering support of the Commission and their commitment to advancing polar knowledge in Canada. Their counsel and dedication to polar issues during their two full three-year terms, the maximum allowed under the CPC legislation, are greatly appreciated.

We would like to welcome new Board members Ron Macnab, Susan Rowley, and François Trudel. All three have made substantial contributions to Canadian arctic research, and we look forward to working with them over the coming years. We also welcome returning board members Jocelyn Barrett and Gordon Miles.
