Restorative Justice Week 2004 ![]() ![]()
Dear Friends, We are excited to tell you about the theme for Restorative Justice Week 2004, "Engaging Us All in the Dialogue". Dialogue is the very core of restorative justice approaches: when harm is incurred, all concerned parties should be provided with an opportunity to participate in, and learn from, respectful dialogue in an effort to restore the injured relationship. In 2004, we mark the 30th anniversary of Canada's first recorded victim-offender mediation in Elmira, Ontario! Just imagine how differently this would have played out for those victims, the offenders, for that community, and for other cases in the years that have followed, if there had been no opportunity for inclusiveness, accountability and reparation. While our journey on the path to restorative justice is still relatively young, it is clear from what we have learned thus far that giving people a voice can facilitate understanding, accountability and healing. As in past years, many individuals and groups have generously contributed to the production of various material for Restorative Justice Week 2004. We are grateful to all who have shared their reflections and insights on restorative justice and on this year's theme. These and many more individuals and groups dedicate their time, expertise, skills and unique perspectives to advancing the principles of restorative justice in their own communities and daily lives.
