Environmental Contaminants and Nuclear Programs Division

The Environmental Protection Branch - Ontario Region (EPB-OR) delivers an extensive range of national programs on a regional level, with particular focus on the Great Lakes ecosystem.

The major responsibilities of the branch include:

  • leading programs to achieve the elimination of persistent toxic substances from the Great Lakes basin ecosystem;
  • implementing national program requirements in Ontario, on both local and regional levels;
  • promoting compliance with applicable environmental protection laws and regulations within the industrial, commercial, and residential sectors including specified crown corporations;
  • developing and facilitating pollution prevention initiatives with key sectors in the Region;
  • representing Environment Canada in local, regional, national and international partnerships.

The Environmental Contaminants and Nuclear Programs Division is the focal point for compliance promotion, toxics reduction, and environmental assessment programs related to:

Oil Drums
  • substances in commerce
  • pollution prevention projects
  • contaminated site remediation
  • hazardous waste reduction
  • nuclear fuel cycle

Environmental Contaminants and Nuclear Programs Division (EC & NPD) is one of six divisions found within the Environmental Protection Branch-Ontario Region. The Division is comprised of three focus areas:
