Canada

In summer 2004, the NCC, in partnership with the City of Ottawa and the Ville de Gatineau, implemented a 10-point action plan to help users stay safe on the Capital Pathway.

  1. Launch of a public safety awareness campaign, in partnership with CJOH and Radio-Nord Communications;

  2. Improvement of pathway connections to complete missing sections;

  3. Installation of new signage that helps users identify where they are and hazards;

  4. Development and posting of safety tips endorsed by regional police services;

  5. Launch of a new cycling website (Biking Country) with at-your-fingertips information on itineraries to help users plan their route in advance;

  6. Creation of a police liaison committee to improve emergency response, incident tracking and training;

  7. Distribution of safety whistles by National Capital Commission’s patrollers, the City of Ottawa’s volunteer pathway patrol and the Ville de Gatineau’s Vélo-Patrouille;

  8. Implementation of a cellular phone loan program, in collaboration with Rogers Wireless;

  9. Support the expansion of the City of Ottawa’s volunteer pathway patrol to the eastern urban sector;

  10. Ongoing review of pathway design and quality standards to minimize hazards.
