There was a time when the whole shoreline of Gatineau was defined by smokestacks and industry. In recent decades, federal acquisition of shore lands, and the construction of federal office towers and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, have transformed the Gatineau skyline into part of the Capital region.
The NCC received federal authority to acquire the industrial lands on the north shore of the Ottawa River (where Scott Paper is currently located) in 2003. However, work remains to be done. When current industrial uses come to a halt, we will:
- ensure, in the context of redevelopment of the Scott Paper site, respect for environmental requirements and procedures with future site remediation, in accordance with proposed land use
- preserve or enhance views of Parliament Hill
- integrate the riverside lands into the Capital network of green spaces and recreational pathways
- enhance and preserve the integrity and health of the Ottawa river shorelines
- provide a dramatic stage for events and activities of national significance
- improve the quality of streetscapes for gateways to the area through initiatives such as public art, signage and enhanced landscaping
