Summer 2005

Thanks to many planning efforts, consultations with the community and major works, LeBreton Flats is home to the Canadian War Museum, a waterfront park and recreational pathways. In the near future, a park for large festivals, businesses, offices, residences, commemorative monuments, and various national institutions will be established. The NCC is finalizing the preparation of the whole LeBreton Flats site.

Work Accomplished:

  • Wellington Street has adopted its final route, and Booth Street north of Fleet Street has been rebuilt.
  • The Canadian War Museum site and the area that will host the first phase of residential and mixed-use redevelopment have been remediated and underground services have been installed.
  • Archaeological digs recovered close to 80,000 artifacts.
  • The Canadian War Museum officially opened on May 7, 2005.
  • The first phase of residential and mixed-use redevelopment is underway, and the proponent of the proposal is refining its design.
  • The development of a riverfront park stretching 1 kilometre along the Ottawa River and located behind the Canadian War Museum, as well as the construction of a new recreational pathway through the park, were completed in July 2005.
  • The Plaza, the eastern tip of the festival site, showcases an exhibit in honour of LeBreton Flats’ past, present and future. The exhibit was unveiled in June 2005.

Upcoming Work:

  • The area west of Booth Street and south of Wellington Street has been partially remediated and archaeological digs have begun.
  • The development of the festival site, which will host events, celebrations and festivals, is scheduled for completion in summer 2007.

The NCC would like to thank you for your participation and patience during the work that has occurred over the last few years. The next important phases of work are planned for the summer of 2006. For more details, please contact us.
