Employment equity is the fair representation and distribution of the four designated groups (women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal Peoples, members of visible minorities) in the workplace. Employment equity is accomplished by employment practices that correct and prevent disadvantages in employment for designated groups through special measures, reasonable accommodation of differences and programs to remove barriers.
Diversity, though broader in scope, encompasses employment equity. It is about the varied perspectives and approaches that members of different identity groups bring to the workplace. Dimensions of diversity may include age, religious background, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, work experience, culture and lifestyle.
