Since the CGC was established in 1965, the Nautical Science Department has delivered the Officer Cadet Training Plan (OCTP), in marine engineering and navigation. After successful completion of the 4 years program graduates from the OCTP receive their Bachelor of Technology (Nautical Science) from the University College of Cape Breton. Engineering graduates also earn their Fourth Class Motor Certificate of Competency, while navigational graduates receive their Watchkeeping Mates Certificate of Competency, with a Coast Guard endorsement.

In February of 2002 the Nautical Science Department introduced its newest program: the Ships Crew Officer Training Program (SCOTP). This 2-year program is very exciting because it offers permanent ship's crew (from the navigational or engineering disciplines) the opportunity to upgrade their standing to an officer status with a SO-MAO-02.
