How can people with disabilities get the services and supports they need?

People with disabilities may need help to live on their own. Their families may need support as well. Different people have different needs. It may depend on:

  • What type of disability they have
  • How severe it is
  • Where they live, work and go to school
  • How else they want to live their life.

Types of supports and services

Here are some kinds of help people with disabilities may need:

Personal care: to help with things like getting dressed and going to the bathroom

Home care: to help with things like housekeeping and shopping

Respite care: to provide time off for unpaid caregivers such as parents

Assistive device programs: to help people get the equipment they need to do things on their own

Rehabilitation services: to help people learn skills to do things on their own
