Allergen Labelling

The Food and Drug Regulations require that most prepackaged foods carry a label and that their ingredients appear in a list on their labels in decreasing order of proportion. Nevertheless, some ingredients and substances used in the manufacture of food products are exempted from declaration in the list of ingredients.

Over the years, scientific evidence has shown that certain food ingredients or components of mixtures currently exempted under the labelling regulations can cause life-threatening or severe adverse reactions in individuals with food sensitivities. As a consequence, Health Canada is proposing to amend the Food and Drug Regulations to enhance labelling requirements for a list of specified substances when added to foods.

The scope of the proposed amendments is described in the attached letters to stakeholders.
