The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is administered by the Social Insurance Registration (SIR) located in Bathurst, New Brunswick. SIR is responsible for the processing of all SIN applications, as well as the issuance of SIN cards.

We process, on average, one million applications for SIN cards annually. 70 % of applications submitted represent new numbers, 8 % amendments and 22 % replacement cards. This averages to 4,000 SIN applications received at SIR every working day.

Approximately 90 % of all SIN applications received at SIR are sent from the 320 Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) offices located throughout Canada. At the local HRDC office, the SIN application forms are certified, which includes the verification of the application and proof-of-identity documents, then sent to SIR for processing. The remaining 10 % of SIN applications received are sent directly to us by mail.

We also respond annually to over 330,000 client enquiries received by telephone, mail, fax and email.. We also provide SIN information to various authorized users and agencies, such as Canada Pension Plan, Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, la Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec and la Régie des rentes du Québec.
